Did you recognize the name Erika Harold? She was crowned Miss America in 2003 and caused a firestorm by making abstinence part of her platform. This was not an attempt to grab a publicity but a courageous stand on a value instilled in her at an early age.
To make the story short, after winning the title of Miss America, Erika made headlines when pageant officials threathened to remove her crown and scholarship unless she stopped speaking of abstinence. That, she said, was when she realized the crown wasn’t the most important thing in her life - her salvation was.
“Like Queen Esther in the Bible, I realized maybe I was meant to be used by God in this conflict.” Erika said. “So I remind myself I live for God’s purpose, and my real crown is in heaven - one I will never lose.”
“Sometimes I feel discouraged and inadequate to give kids what they need to hear,” Erika says. “So I ask God to guide me. And I remember my favorite verse, Psalm 37:4 which says to delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. So I don’t give up. I persevere.”
